Ashtanga Yoga: Introductory Poses
Author: Nicki Doane
Resource Type: DVD
RRP: USD $19.98
Analysis:
- Running time: 1 hour 25 minutes.
- The “introductory poses” presented is really just surya namaskara A and B (Sun salutation A and B). No other Ashtanga yoga asanas are covered in this DVD.
- The guided sun salutation practice runs for about 55 minutes and includes the opening chant and guided relaxation.
- The practice starts with a guided opening chant.
- Very suitable for the complete beginner, Nicki Doane takes you through both versions of Sun Salutations.
- Sun salutations are broken down into small, simple-to-follow steps. Steps are repeated several times to help beginners remember the sequence.
- The DVD has a “Program and Pose Guide”, where you can select to see a more detailed explanation of each pose and its alignment.
- Nicki Doane’s voice throughout the guided suryanamaskara practice is a little slow, deliberate and monotonous. Takes some getting use to!
- The DVD is set under palm trees in Hawaii and the background environment is truly spectacular, very beautiful. The only downside of having it outside is that Nicki Doane is squinting in the sun, which doesn’t look particularly relaxing.
- Interview with Nicki Doane was very insightful and her normal conversing voice is more pleasant than the one in the guided practice.
- It may be best to watch the interview with Nicki Doane before watching the practice. This will give you more of an insight of the person she is, the practice you’re about to experience and also helps in getting adjusted to the tone of her voice.
- The “Advanced Ashtanga Demonstration” part of the DVD runs for about 5-6 minutes and is very beautiful and inspiring.
- Pose guide poster is really just a suryanamaskara A poster.
Backcover:
A hatha yoga breathing system developed by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, Ashtanga yoga can, if practiced regularly, detoxify the body, focus the mind and polish the heart. Because of its physically challenging nature, few have been able to make the practice a part of their lives - until now.
Under the guidance of her teacher, Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, Acclaimed yoga instructor Nicki Doane makes this powerful practice accessible to everyone in Ashtanga Yoga: Introductory Poses. At a pace that makes Ashtanga easier to learn, she shows you Active Vinyasa, or flowing postures and breath, to link mind and body; Ujjayi Breathing, or ocean sounds breathing, to create rhythm and focus the mind; and Bandhas, or internal locks, to regulate the body’s energy flow.
Filmed amid the stunning beauty of Doane’s native Hawaii, this program will help you plant the seed for your Ashtanga practice. Dynamic flow of movement and breath sets the rhythm for each session and builds the foundation for the Ashtanga Yoga series, deepening your personal insight and leading you to greater strength, serenity and peace within.
The Deluxe DVD Edition Includes:
- The complete program, fully chaptered for convenient access
- Pose Guide poster & program segment with positioning details
- Interview with instructor Nicki Doane
- Advanced Ashtanga demonstration
“Yoga is 99% practice, 1% theory. Do you practice and all is coming.” - Sri K. Pattabhi Jois

Just Jane said,
I was disappointed with this DVD, I was expecting so much more but it was just a detailed breakdown of sun salutations. And despite what anyone may say, I’ll never get use to that woman’s voice.
