Anatomy of Hatha Yoga: A Manual for Students, Teachers, and Practitioners
Authors: David Coulter, Forward by Timothy McCall
Resource Type: Book
RRP: USD $40.00
Analysis:
- Amazingly comprehensive book.
- Written by an anatomist with a PhD with many years experience in yoga.
- Uses English instead of sanskrit asana names.
- Explains the anatomy and physiology of asanas in Hatha yoga.
- Lacks any non-physical aspect of Hatha yoga, eg pranayama.
- Utilizes black and white photographs for illustration of asanas.
- Interesting book as it takes a look at Hatha yoga from a scientific point of view.
- Definitely an anatomy text, not an instructional yoga book.
- Not suitable for beginners, especially if you want to learn yoga from a book.
- Makes an excellent reference book for advanced students and yoga teachers.
- Makes use of anatomical nomenclature and terminology, which can seem off-putting at first.
- Although not strictly about Ashtanga yoga, the book covers asanas which are used in Ashtanga yoga practice.
- Unique book that fills a void in yoga literature, ie presents Hatha yoga in scientific terms while respecting its origins and principles.
