pending first visit to mysore

i've been practicing Ashtanga daily for just over a year now and i'm looking to visit Mysore to study with Sri K. Pattabhi Jois

has anyone been there? what's it like? what can i expect?

i'm a little apprehensive because i heard india isn't such a nice place to visit, but i'm willing to go anyway to study with skpj.

any and all advice will be greatly appreciated
